Client Story - Kim

It’s the Clothes, Not My Body

Smiling woman in blue. Former Wear Out There client.

Kim is a mother of four, has a dog, friends and a social life. She works full-time in an Associate Director role. She does a weekly Facebook live, which is streamed across the globe and conducts in-person presentations, along with her other daily tasks. We share all this, because she has a full plate, like so many of us.

When our founder, Christina, met Kim, she was looking to better understand how to dress for her figure. It had changed in the last few years and she wanted to discover her own style. Kim was also getting ready for a big conference and wanted to look her very best.

After our first learning session, Kim let Christina pull some outfits at a store, which were out of her comfort zone, and she boldly tried them all on. Some were good, others, not so good, but together, they learned what worked on HER exact figure.

Kim kindly let us ask her a few questions about her experience.

How did you feel about your style before working with Wear Out There?

I didn’t have a clue about style. Shopping for clothes was overwhelming because I had no idea what to look for or how to build a wardrobe of pieces that worked together. I didn’t know what types of clothes best suited my body and would blame my body when clothes didn’t look right. I thought that I needed to change my body shape so clothes would look good on me.

How did this make you feel?

Awful, ashamed, frumpy. I am a smart woman and not knowing how to dress made me feel inept.

Why did you decide to get some support in this area?

I had a big conference coming up and I would be on stage and speaking to large groups of people for a whole week. I knew I didn’t have the clothes for it and didn’t want to waste a ton of money on clothes that I felt icky in and didn’t work together.

So initially, I wanted to find a stylist to help me pick out some clothes for this event. I was bold and sent Wear Out There a message and Christina’s response was so lovely, caring, knowledgeable and accommodating. We made an appointment to meet as soon as we could. It was so much more than a stylist consultation. Christina really understood the why behind my need for help and I have learned so much from her. I am more confident and comfortable in my body now.

What was the most valuable tip you received during your session(s) that you would like to share with others?

Learning the specific styles that worked best for my body. The reason some clothes don’t look good on me has NOTHING to do with how big or small my body is and EVERYTHING to do with selecting pieces that are the right style for my body.

How have I never known this before?

Christina is body neutral which means that she works with clients of all shapes and sizes to find what works for them. She has a lovely way about her and makes you feel comfortable. I hated clothes shopping and now I understand how to go about it and what to look for.

The one-on-one session I did with Christina where she taught me what colours and styles complimented me was incredibly helpful! We then had a shopping session, and this was life changing. She got me to try on things I would NEVER had worn and I learned so much. You know you can trust a sister when you come out of the change room and she immediately says, “No! that one doesn’t work!”

Have you noticed any changes or benefits from the knowledge you’ve learned?

I now feel confident and knowledgeable about my fashion choices. When I shop, I am now looking for specific pieces to compliment my wardrobe—not aimlessly digging through racks and racks of clothes that I am too whatever to look good in.

If the store doesn’t have the styles I am looking for, it is the store's fault and not my body’s!

How do you feel about your style now?

I have one! At my recent conference, I wore pieces that Christina and I had shopped for together and others that I had found on my own. I felt fabulous and people actually stopped me in the halls to compliment my look!
