Accessories Can Really Make an Outfit

Maggie is a graduate student, who was looking to upgrade her wardrobe from busy student to professional woman. During two sessions with Wear Out There, we worked to identify Maggie’s style personality, and created new outfits from pieces she already owned. Maggie has to deal with unpredictable temperatures in the local university’s student offices (layering is a must), attending conferences, and also field visits. Maggie also wants to make an impression with those she meets as she will be transitioning into the working world soon.

When our founder, Christina, met Maggie, she had some wonderful pieces, but did need a few more to round out her professional wardrobe. Because Maggie doesn’t wear these more formal pieces every day as she is a student first, we also wanted to focus on finding items that could transition easily between her two lifestyles. We found accessories were the best way to bring some personality to her already great basics.

Huge thank you to the lovely Maggie for sharing her story with us below.

How did you feel about your style and wardrobe before working with Wear Out There? What were your biggest struggles and concerns? How did this make you feel?

My wardrobe confused me. I liked most of my clothes, but I was never certain what worked well together and what was considered “appropriate” for my position. I am a graduate student, so I wanted to look professional, but at the same time I am working with a limited budget, and comfort is also very important to me. I wanted to be comfortable in my clothes, but I also wanted to feel like me. I was having a hard time trying to define my own style, while still walking the student/professional line. It was frustrating to me that each time I looked at my clothes, I felt as though I had nothing to wear; even worse, was when I loved a certain piece of clothing, but could never figure out what I should wear with it.

Why did you decide to get some support in this area?

I am attending conferences and starting to meet people/prospective employers in my field, and I wanted to look put together and memorable (in a good way) so that when I begin looking for a career after I graduate, I would already have made a good impression.

What was the most valuable tip you received during your session(s) that you would like to share?

Accessories can really “make” an outfit.

Have you noticed any changes or benefits from the knowledge you’ve learned?

I feel more confident in picking out an outfit. I accessorize so much more now, and I have realized that accessories really do pull an outfit together. I love knowing which colours are more suited to my skin tone as well; it was a big question that I had always wondered about.

How do you feel about your style now?

I feel like my style shows the real me now. I feel so much more confident and self-assured when I put an outfit together.
